Do you dream of starting a business and becoming an entrepreneur but you aren’t sure what business to start? There are thousands of potential profitable business ideas for women for just about anyone. In this post, I’ll explore some of the best business ideas for women, what you should consider before starting a business, how to start a business, and much more. Let’s get started!

What to Consider Before Starting Your Business

There are some considerations you'll want to take into account before going all in on entrepreneurship. From healthcare to an unsteady paycheck, below are some of the most important things to think about before starting your business.

Health Insurance

Unfortunately for many entrepreneurs, health insurance is typically paid for by employers. Meaning when you start a business, you'll need to pay for your insurance out of pocket. While it might not seem like a big deal, insurance can cost you hundreds of dollars per month. Before starting your business you can check to see how much it could cost. Here's the good news: if your partner is employed by a company that offers insurance, he or she might be capable of supplying the insurance for your family.

Work Hours

When starting your own business, you might need to work significantly more at first to get it off the ground. Where a traditional job you might work from 9-5 daily, with a business you might be working consistent 10 hour days and many weekends. While this might not be a problem for some people, some might find this unattractive.

Pay and Profitability

The truth be told, many small businesses will fail within the first year of business. Some stats indicate that over 20% of businesses will fail within the first two years of operation. Entrepreneurship of any kind is not for those who are afraid of failure. During the first few years of business you might not make much money at all. In fact, you might need to invest more money to keep your venture afloat. Top Business Ideas for Women

Best Business Ideas for Women

Below are some of my favorite business ideas for women to start. While not every business idea will work for everyone, there are sure to be some on the list that suit your interests!

Start a Blog

Blogging is one of my favorite businesses to start for just about anyone because of how little you'll need to get started. While this is by no means a new business idea it can be a great start for someone just starting their entrepreneurship journey. Starting a blog can cost less than a couple of hundred dollars per year — making it one of the most affordable businesses to start. If you want to be your own boss — starting an online business is a perfect start. But with blogging, you’re not going to become rich overnight. In fact, many blogs will take 8+ months to start making real money (not to mention the large amount of work required). To start a blog, you’ll want to determine what niche to write about. There are many types of blogs to consider but ultimately you’ll want to choose something you’re passionate about so that you don’t give up when times get tough. For example, my blog is about personal finance, investing, and entrepreneurship. This is something I love working on, making it that much easier when I don’t feel like writing. After deciding what niche to blog in, you can choose a domain name for it. When picking a domain name, be sure to choose something relevant and memorable. This will help explain your blog to users who have no visited before. To purchase your domain name I recommend using Namecheap. Namecheap offers domain names for less than $10 a year.
NameCheap is my favorite domain registrar to easily purchase your next domain name. They are extremely affordable with domains costing less than $9. Sign-up below!

SiteGround is affordable and has top rated customer service to solve any problems you might have quickly. Hosting will cost around $10 per month for beginner blogs.

Finally, you can install WordPress on your blog and get started creating unique and engaging content. To grow a successful blog, you’ll want to think about how you will grow traffic and attract new visitors. There are a few main traffic sources to consider: SEO (search engines), social media, and referral traffic from other sites. Each traffic source will require a different strategy to gain traffic. At the beginning it’s best to focus on one traffic source before diversifying your traffic once your blog begins to grow. By starting your own blog you can build an income stream that can last a lifetime. Related: Types of Blogs That Make Money Top Business Ideas for Women - Online Courses

Create an Online Course Business

While you could include this business under blogging or an online business, I believe selling online courses can be a business of its own. With this business, you'll create a course to sell online. Your course can be about anything. For example, you might create a course on how to budget your money or a course on how to eat healthy on the go. The most difficult part of creating a course to sell is the work that it will take upfront. You'll need to dedicate some time developing your course and ensuring it is a quality product before you can begin selling it. Once your course is completed you can sell it online and promote it across the web via your website or blog, social media, or other channels. The income potential can be massive selling courses. Some entrepreneurs have made millions of dollars with this business. Check out the video below for more help selling an online course!
Make Candles

Start a Candle Business

If you are creative and like candles, starting a candle business can be an excellent business for women entrepreneurs. Starting a candle business is much more simple that you probably think. The supplies will cost less than a few hundred dollars to start. The most difficult part of a candle business is perfecting the scents you sell. This is basically a process of trial and error. You’ll need to invest a significant amount of time finding out which scents work and which don’t before you go all in with your candle business. When starting a candle making business, you can choose to sell your candles online through your own website or through e-commerce sites like Etsy, Amazon, or eBay. Another option is to sell your candles locally via farmers markets, flea markets, or a physical store. The profit margins on candles can be very lucrative making it one of the best business ideas for women. Wedding Planning Business

Starting a wedding planning business is a great business idea for any women looking to build their own business. If you’ve been married before, this can make things much easier for you to start. This business idea is a service based business meaning you won’t need to carry inventory or purchase work space to operate your company. This is a perfect business idea for women with some extra time on their hands. It’s possible to build a wedding planning business while also working a full time job. As a wedding planner you’ll need to coordinate everything for the brides big day. This means working with caterers, venues, and many other companies to setup for wedding events. Working as a wedding planner can be stressful so you need to be extremely organized and a great communicator to be successful. How much money can you make? Ultimately it will depend on the number of clients you can get. It’s possible to charge a few thousand dollars for each client you work with.

Start an Event Planning Business

Just like wedding planning, event planning can be a great business to start for many people. If you are organized, communicative, and enjoy the success of a fantastic event – event planning might be in your future. Just like working a wedding, event planning can be quite lucrative. Photography Business

A photography business is a good business idea for anyone with some extra time and photography skills. This is another service based business that you can start on a budget. While a nice digital camera can cost a few thousand dollars, this can be recouped with just one photo shoot. The most difficult part of owning a photography business is competing with many other photographers in your area. If you want to avoid this challenge, you could opt to sell stock photographs instead. This will come with it’s own set of challenges but there are also some benefits. Stock photography allows you to sell photos online for cash. It can be an excellent source of passive income for women looking to make some extra cash. To start a photography business I'd recommend investing in a high quality camera and lenses that can cost a few thousand dollars. Related: How to Sell Stock Photos and Make Money

Pet sitting is one of the easiest businesses you can start. Because it is a service based business, there are no costs to get started other than a place to keep the animals. Drop Shipping Business

Many online business ideas will require you to put in extraordinary work before you can start making money. But with a drop shipping business, most of the work is done for you. You’ll need to open an online shop for users to purchase items but after the purchase is complete, the rest of the work is done for you. When starting a drop shipping business you’ll need to search for manufacturers that offer drop shipping services and the costs associated with it. Because there is less work for you to do, sometimes the profit margins can be minimal.

Real estate can be a great way to build your income and make money. By starting a rental property business you can earn residual income each month that builds over time. There are a few types of real estate you might consider: residential real estate or commercial real estate. Within these types, there are several niches. For example, in residential real estate you might choose to purchase a single family home, or a short term rental. Starting a rental property business will require some capital and work in the beginning phases. You'll need to renovate your properties and determine how to find and vet potential tenants. The key to operating rental properties is defining your processes to become more efficient. Rental properties can generate copious amounts of income each month and the profits can be considerable. By investing in real estate you'll make money via two methods: capital appreciation and the rent payments you make. Capital appreciation is the increase in value of your property over time. For example, if you purchase a single family home for $150,000, in 10 years it could be worth over $200,000. This means you would net $50,000 in capital appreciation. This is in addition to the rent payments you collect each month.
